  Lacrosse Participation Grows 12.8%

US Lacrosse Logo Medium (116 x 70)BALTIMORE - Lacrosse participation increased 12.8 percent in 2007, up from 11.7 percent in 2006, according to research by US Lacrosse for its annual participation report. There were 480,627 lacrosse players that were members of organized teams across the country in 2007, from the youth level all the way through the professional ranks.

High school participation saw the largest percentage of increase in participation over the past year, at 18.6 percent, with 201,250 total players in 2007. The youth participation, however, continues to make up the largest part of the lacrosse community with 241,581 players in 2007.

“It’s obviously very important to understand how and where the sport is growing so we can evaluate the success of our development initiatives and more effectively market the sport,” said Steve Stenersen, President and CEO of US Lacrosse. “Over the past decade, US Lacrosse has invested millions of dollars in human and programmatic resources to support the sport’s continued national expansion, and we’re pleased to see these positive results.”

The US Lacrosse Participation Survey is produced annually by US Lacrosse. The survey is used to monitor participation at different levels of the sport across the country. The primary source of data for this report are surveys completed by the 58 US Lacrosse regional chapters that were active in 2007. Data is also used from the US Lacrosse database, National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Federation of State High School Associations, Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association and www.laxpower.com. The survey counts only participation on organized teams and does not include leisure time play of lacrosse.

Click here to access a copy of the full participation report, available on the US Lacrosse web site.

  Coming to a head
A study on concussions is helping US Lacrosse, the sport's Baltimore-based governing body, figure out how to protect its athletes

By Meredith Cohn | Baltimore Sun

Lacrosse helmetsConcussions have long been an unwelcome byproduct of sports.
And while more attention has been paid in recent years to preventing the mild brain injuries among professional and school-age players, much of the focus, as well as the studies, have been limited to the high-profile and prime-offending game of football

Officials at US Lacrosse, the sport's governing body, said they also need to step up efforts to learn how players get hurt and how to minimize risks. One recently released study has helped the group understand the frequency of injury and differences between males and females..

The results form the basis for further research that could eventually lead to changes in equipment or rules for one of the most popular sports in Maryland and one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. About a half-million play organized lacrosse.

US Lacrosse Adds New Chapters in Alaska and Houston

BALTIMORE– US Lacrosse, the national governing body for the sport, has announced the addition of two new chapters to the organization: Alaska and Houston.
US Lacrosse Logo Medium (116 x 70)
US Lacrosse now has 60 regional chapters in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Each chapter exists to provide US Lacrosse programs and services to its local membership. Men’s and women’s youth lacrosse clinics, coaching education clinics, and officials’ clinics are a few of the US Lacrosse programs offered through these regional chapters.
“The addition of the Alaska and Houston chapters demonstrates how far-reaching the sport of lacrosse has become,” said Erin Sturgis, director of chapter relations for US Lacrosse. “Our organization and the passionate volunteers in these regions are making the opportunity to get involved in this sport possible.” (more…)
